Located in Wyandot County in Northwest Ohio. Population Of 6400. Small rural community that is made up of farmland, factories, and several small agricultural businesses. The area also has the highly traveled highways of U.S.30 and U.S.23 along with State Routes 67, 53, and 199.
Upper Sandusky is rich in history, yet clearly focused on the future. Our origins date back to the early 1780’s and was home to the Wyandotte Native Americans until 1842. Upper Sandusky became the Wyandot County seat in 1843 and is referred to as “Upper” by the local residents because it is located on the upper reaches of the Sandusky River.
Upper Sandusky was laid out in 1848 and had only wells and buckets owned by individuals until April1858 when it had its first piece of fire equipment. A hook and ladder with a wagon was purchased for $75 and later in that year a frame building was secured to house the fire equipment.
Being a town of less than 4,000 in population in May 1867, it purchased a steam engine with hose
And a hose cart from the H.C. Silsby
Co. for $8,500. the steamer was called "The Wyandot Chief". It was soon after, that arrangements were made for a building and cisterns were placed over the town for a water supply, these were used until 1880 when the water works was built. The first record of firemen's organizations was in April 1869 when full sets of officers were elected. John Grose as Chief and P. O'Brien the First Engineer. On July 3, 1869 the same year, the firemen carried away three prizes at the Firemen's Convention held at Bucyrus, which was called then "Firemen's Tournament". The prizes won were: The Wyandot Steam Engine, first prize $50,
Volunteer Hose Co. best time and prize, $20, and Young America Hook and Ladder Co. best time, $10.
Buckets, ladders and an axe for the hook and ladder company were obtained in August 1870. then in February 1872, Councilman P. O'Brien was authorized to contract for an additional hose cart. A building to store the engine and Mayor's Office was erected in 1873, at the cost of $1,445 for a brick structure.
On January 29, 1874 a contact was let for a bell weighing 500 pounds to the Bell Foundry in Troy, N.Y. During the same year a chemical engine was purchased, which had a capacity of one hundred gallons, the cost being $850.00.
